Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get Full Cave Certified?
It depends on starting level, usually, someone who is already a certified Sidemount diver will need 12 to 14 days to complete all overhead certifications from Cavern to Full Cave. Visit the Training page to read more about each block of training.
How much does training cost?
Training is charged per day, 2025 rates are at 360USD per person per day. Charging a daily fee allows us all the flexibility to work at the studen’ts pace. Consult the Training page to read more about fees and please read the cancellation policy.
How big are the groups in a cave class?
I am known for conducting mainly private sessions, this means I do not require a mininum of students to book a class. I love working one on one with divers looking to become cave divers because I can adapt 100% to their needs. However, training with a buddy is also enriching and challenging in different ways, therefore recommended. Students with challenges often prefer to take a private class to be able to take the pressure off and move at their own pace. Training rates are the same for private and team classes.
What is your training style as a cave instructor?
I am energetic, honest, and strict. I believe in hard work and keeping an open mind to be able to break through our challenges. I also believe that the student and I are a team, I want the same as you: sucess. If you succeed, I succeed. I am here to help you, assist you and encourage you. I will always bring the bar higher and when you achieve a superior level, I will find a way to raise it again, so that you can achieve the highest level possible with your abilities and your skills. I need your trust and I need you to believe you will make it. I also work a lot with body and mind connection, I work with breathing techniques, core strengthening methods and positive visualization.
How early do I need to book my cave course?
I am usually booked six months in advance, if you want to secure your spot make sure you contact me and provide potential dates of training right away so I can give you priority.
Why is training costly?
Cave diving and cave training are not cheap. I have spent a decade being trained myself and investing in acquiring experience in numerous techniques and methods for diving and teaching, so I know more than anyone how much cave diving costs! Trasmitting my knowledge to you and being able to draw real life experience to teach you the most technical and risky type of diving comes with a cost as well. Running a cave class in airconditioned shop with multimedia, maintaining a functional vehicle, and sustaining the costs of gear, tanks, permits, etc. is not cheap even if I operate in Mexico. On the other hand, you can guarantee to get the most of your class because:
I train full days from 8 to 6 and I am available for extra hours when the team has a challenge that needs a plus
I am flexible and understand we can make mistakes or we forget gear at the shop, if needed I will run back for your forgotten suit or boots, given that it’s not every day!
I have complimentary equipment to lend you, from boots, to fins, to lights, etc. You can test computers, canister lights, transmitters and more! Just ask.
I do not only train you in cave diving, I am your coach in the personal development needed for being a sound cave diver, this means I have also put effort in my own personal development and continue to train and learn to become a better instructor every day.
I do not have a limit of days I can train on a single skill or a specific challenge, my commitment is to push through together with you, as long as it takes, I do not drop my students when they do not perform.
I speak and teach English, French and Spanish. I also have knowledge of German and Dutch, when we need a language to understand each other better, we will find it.
I do not spare in entrance fees, some cenotes have higher entrance fees but I do not avoid them for this reason, during my training I will make sure you will see a variety of sites both in Tulum and Playa del Carmen which is a longer drive during a training day.
Do I need to buy my gear?
I prefer to train students on their own gear because they leave with perfectly aligned harnesses, however, this is not compulsory. If you do not have your own gear I will teach you to adjust the harness just like I do with someone who has their own gear. But you will then have to do so on your own. I have rental gear available free of charge during training, please get in touch.
Can I rent all the gear?
You can rent most gear but I require to come with your basic gear: Suit (wet or dry), mask, hood or hooded vest, boots, fins.
Is it better to train in a wetsuit or a dry suit?
I prefer to teach students in a dry suit if that’s what they normally wear. There are many details in the technique that have to do with finetuning the buoyancy and the abilities so it is more valuable to understand this during training than have to use a wetsuit for training only. Having said that, you may use a wetsuit, always that it is minimum 5mm.
Is it better to do a cave course in Backmount or Sidemount?
I can train you in both techniques, however there are a few things to consider:
If you dive a certain configuration already, we will start overhead training after doing one or two days of checkout dives. If you want to learn a new technique, we will have to spend at least 4 days learning the new configuration.
Learning a new configuration is always interesting, I do recommend it to be a well rounded diver, if you have time to train in Sidemount before your cave course, this is a common course of action.
